The Pioneer Cemetery is the first cemetery in Barlow County in the Melisende Dulac Series. The formal name is the Bouton Shatter Hill Cemetery[1]. The name "Pioneer Cemetery" is used primarily by Barlow County residents.

Details

Adjacent to the Old Mortuary on Shatter Hill, most of the old families of Barlow County have plots here. In the latter half of the 1800s, many of those buried here were area miners. As the population of the county grew and the economy diversified, other county cemeteries were established, but because of the esteem in which Eugène de Bouton was held, his mortuary and cemetery was by many considered worth the journey to Shatter Hill for the final rest of their families.

Melisende's bedroom at the Old Mortuary looked out on the cemetery, a view she found comforting.[2]

The Pioneer Cemetery is open daily for visitors from two hours after dawn until one hour before dusk.[3]
