Located in a south Barlow County, the creek is fed by springs and small streams on the southern flank of Shatter Hill, including a tributary called Little Liver Creek. The name derives from its red color caused by silt from the iron rich rock formations it flows through.
It flows west through Condon Valley, location of the Caratachea and Pendry ranches.
