Biography
Clifford was a deputy sheriff in Tillamook County. He had romantic feelings for Eden Pond, though she did not reciprocate.
After the outbreak of World War II, he hoped for his release from the Sheriff's Office so he could join the U.S. Navy. He wants the Navy because his father served in the Merchant Marines, and was one of 24 killed when the tanker SS Vacuum was sunk by a German u-boat in the Hebrides Islands[1].
