After the outbreak of World War II, he hoped for his release from the Sheriff's Office so he could join the U.S. Navy. Clifford was a deputy sheriff in Tillamook County. In high school, he expressed romantic feelings for Eden Pond that she did not reciprocate.

Though something of a troublemaker as a boy, as an adult went to work as a deputy sheriff in Tillamook County. Still, he had an unpleasant demeanor and continued to treat Eden with a degree of disdain even years after his advances were rebuffed in high school
